This website is intended to promote retinal camera digital conversion kits and imaging accessories for the ophthalmic practice. Also includes The Hairy Eye blog and podcast, a sometimes irreverent look at eye care and eye wear.
Orphan Ophthalmics exists to update older equipment to compete with today's technology.
Who is the target audience for your website?
Orphan looks forward to welcoming doctors and professional staff involved in eye care, as well anyone in the general public with an interest in how the eye care industry works, in conjunction with the Hairy Eye Network podcasts and blogs. We will shortly be adding a gallery to display some of the finest examples of what doctors using our kits have been able photograph.
What is the advantage of your website over others?
In our never-to-be-humble opinion, Orphan's website offers more in-depth information, and a wider range of information on all aspects of digital imaging conversion, as well as the opportunity for the community at large to contribute suggestions and advice through our blog page.
There's also the Hairy Eye Podcast, through which we also comment on the eye care industry in general, offering a plainspoken view from the cheap seats for the public to enjoy and benefit from (dangling participle and all!)
Tell us a story about this website.
We actually received more encouragement to include "The Hairy Eye" from patients, friends of our own professional practice, and others than we did for the primary site itself. The challenge became for us, then, how to get the cart to pull the horse, and make it look good doing it! Since it's inception, the natural order of the universe has been restored - still, it's a lot of fun from time to time to take a break from all that science and yak about topics of greater general interest.
Why did you use this Sandvox design?
I could easily modify the standard CSS layout to generate a custom site that was still easy to construct and update. While the look is clean, I'm still pondering ways to make it more readable on smaller device screens and a greater number of mobile devices, and I believe this design offers the best opportunity to provide these tweaks.
What techniques did you use to build this website?
The only code injection (ie., kinda, sorta cool coding) I've done was to include a live date update for the news feed page. The only other bit I'm proud of is the ease with which the CSS style sheets and jpg files could be altered (using GraphicConverter) to convey a whole new look with very little code modification to an existing design. Kudos to Karelia for making this type of mod so easy!
