Many people on the autism spectrum have great difficulty learning and using conventional language. This website presents the use of drawing as an alternate and augmentative mode of communication for individuals on the autism spectrum.
"Autism and the Art of Communication" was started in 2010 by Sheila Bell and Casey Vandergrient. It is a non-profit venture designed to share the potential of using drawing and other art forms to help individuals with autism communicate and learn. Many of the techniques shared here were originally developed in my work with Casey's son Adam, whose communication and learning skills are severely affected by autism.
Who is the target audience for your website?
This website is designed to be used by parents, educators, and therapists, as well as people on the autism spectrum themselves.
What is the advantage of your website over others?
We are a non-profit organization, and our goal is to freely share helpful information about how to creatively reach and teach individuals on the autism spectrum.
Why did you use this Sandvox design?
I chose "Outside the Lines" because that describes how we work (and the visual matched our artistic content). I like the fact that we can replace the photo banner with our own picture featuring the artwork of individuals on the autism spectrum - it gives the site more individual character.
